What happened to Godfreys?

The vacuum cleaner retailer Godfreys Group entered voluntary administration in January 2024 and closed stores at the end of May 2024.
 
 
Reasons for the closure
The company struggled with profitability due to several factors, including lower customer demand, higher operating costs, and increased competition. 
 
 
Administrators
PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) were appointed administrators and received 55 expressions of interest in the business, but none were considered viable. 
 
 
Store closures
141 stores in Australia and New Zealand closed, resulting in 600 job losses. 
 
 
Franchisee stores
Franchisee stores had until March 31 to sell any remaining stock. 
 
 
Godfreys was established in 1931 and became one of the world’s largest specialist vacuum retailers. In 2018, Johnston took over the business through Arcade Finance. By 2024, they went into voluntary administration.
